Karauli is the Historical place and was found by King Arjun Pal of the Yadav Empire in 1348. Its original name was Kalyanpura because of the famous temple of Kalyan of the town. Earlier it was called Bhadrawati due to its location on the bank of river Bhadrawati. The circumference of Karauli under walled city is 3.7 km. and the wall is made of red sand stone. It has six large gateways (Darwaza) and twelve small gateways (Khirkiyan). The town has grown considerably from its original area of 1.05 sq. km. to 33.00 sq. km. On 19th July, 1997 Karauli was declared a new district and become the 32nd district of Rajashtan. The nearest rail-head of the western railway is Hindaun at a distance of about 30 kms. and another is Gangapur city at 35 kms. The fair of Kaila Devi, popularly hold an important place among the celebrated fairs of Rajasthan. The fair is held at the village Kaila in Karauli district in the month of Chaitra, starting from Chaitra Budhi 12 and lasting for a fortnight. Town is approachable by well-maintained roads from Hindaun and Gangapur. During the fair, the state transport as well as private operators provides bus services, keeping in mind the huge inflow of pilgrims. The population of City is 66239 souls as per census 2001. District Collector is working for identifying the total likely investments based on the priority work and deficiencies in the infrastructure sectors in consultation with public representatives including infrastructure development work like water supply, sewerage, etc. of worth 75.08 crores have been tentatively identified by line agency concerned/District Administration.

The work includes laying of 93.13 km pipelines, construction of 5 no water reservoirs and 7000 no domestic water meters etc.
The work include laying of 35.66 km sewer lines, construction of 5 MLD sewerage treatment plant (STP) and 3 no sewerage pumping station.
The work includes Construction of minor bridge.
The work includes restoration of city wall gates.
