	Bhilwara is an important industrial city of Rajasthan. Bhilwara has a special identity in the textile, building stone and mica industry. Bhilwara is also called the "Textile City" and "Manchester" of Rajasthan due to the prominence of the textile industry. Bhilwara was the commercial center of Rajputana before the arrival of the railway in 1881. Rapid development of Bhilwara city due to the expansion of population due to the establishment of industrial units as well as the establishment of administrative offices and institutions.

Due to the increasing population, major problems of residential facilities and traffic etc. arose, due to which the State Government established the City Improvement (Development) Trust on 16 September 1967 to provide planned urban and residential facilities to the residents of the city and for the planned development of Bhilwara city. done. Shri Gyanmal Kothari was the first nominated chairman of Urban Development Trust Bhilwara by the state government.
	भीलवाड़ा राजस्थान का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण औद्योगिक शहर है। कपड़ा, इमारती पत्थर एवं अभ्रक उद्योग में भीलवाड़ा की विशेष पहचान है। वस्त्र उद्योग की प्रमुखता के कारण भीलवाड़ा को ’’टेक्सटाइल सिटी’’ और राजस्थान का ’’मेनचेस्टर’’ भी कहा जाता है। सन् 1881 में रेलवे के आवागमन से पूर्व भीलवाड़ा राजपूताना का वाणिज्यिक केन्द्र था। स्वतंत्रता प्राप्ति के पश्चात् विस्थापितों के आवागमन के साथ-साथ अन्य औद्योगिक इकाइयों की स्थापना से जनसंख्या विस्तार के साथ ही प्रशासनिक कार्यालयों तथा संस्थाओं की स्थापना से भीलवाड़ा शहर का तीव्र विकास हुआ। 1941 में नगर की जनसंख्या 15,169 थी, जो कि सन् 2001 में बढ़कर 2,80,128 हो गई अर्थात् इन 60 वर्षों में जनसंख्या 18 गुणा बढ गयी। 2011 की जनगणना के अनुसार भीलवाड़ा शहर की जनसंख्या 3.60 लाख थी। वर्तमान में शहर की जनसंख्या लगभग 4,73,567 है, जनसंख्या के आधार पर भीलवाड़ा राजस्थान का 8वां सबसे बड़ा षहर है। बढ़ती जनसंख्या के कारण आवासीय सुविधाएं व यातायात आदि की प्रमुख समस्याएं उत्पन्न हुई, जिससे शहर वासियों को नियोजित नगरीय व आवासीय सुविधाएं उपलब्ध कराने हेतु व भीलवाड़ा शहर के नियोजित विकास के लिए राज्य सरकार द्वारा 16 सितम्बर 1967 में नगर सुधार (विकास) न्यास की स्थापना की गई। राज्य सरकार द्वारा नगर विकास न्यास भीलवाड़ा के प्रथम मनोनीत अध्यक्ष श्री ज्ञानमल कोठारी थे।
